Puerto Galera - Mindoro Travel Guide
Puerto Galera is on Mindoro island, it is a very popular tourist spot in the Philippines, and every year thousands of tourists flock to this beach area. It is also a very popular spot for weekend trips from the dusty and dirty Manila.
Puerto Galera has several different beaches and each appeal to a different crowd.
Puerto Galera is good all year round, but it is a lot rainer from August to October, and if you prefer the cooler season then you should definately go around December / January. Puero Galera has been my Christmas vacation spot for the last couple of years, being from denmark with snow and all, there is nothing better than sitting on a beach in nothing but your short pant on christmas day. Added to that is the fact that there is now a Danish resort in Sabang, so I can get danish christmas food. The Resort is called Mermaid Resort, they feature the newest and best designed rooms, and as the only hotel in Puerto Galera they got high speed Internet in every room.
Mindoro is also home of the tamaraws, a rare animal resembling the Philippine water buffalo (Carabao)
Sabang Beach
This is the most developed and most popular destination, Sabang beach is horrible for swimming as the water is so dirty and polluted that nobody should ever go in it. Swimming is however possible in the next bay which is an easy 10 - 15 minute walk away. Sabang has loads of nice hotels and bars, even a floating bar. Sabang has 4 Gogo Bars as well, which is mostly frequented by single Korean males, the gogo scene does not overpower this destination and you will still see plenty of regular families vacationing here.
La Laguna
Big La Laguna and Small La Laguna are located withing walking distance of Sabang Beach, and they are much better for swimming, this area has mostly hotels, restaurants and dive shops.
Coco Beach
This is a Scandinavian owned resort, and they cater mostly to Scandinavians on package tours, I have never been impressed with the beach there and they tend to have the highest prices around. The resort itself is pretty nice and they built their cottages rising up against the mountainside, so the view from is very nice.
White Beach
This is the most quiet place of them all, and it is not uncommon to find good standard rooms at P500 - P600 a night here. The beach gets a little boat traffic with tourists from the other beaches at day time, cause this is by far the best developed beach for swimming and snorkling in Puerto Galera.
